After a long offseason, the 2015 BCFC season is set to kick off this Saturday beginning with the Langley Rams taking on the Vancouver Island Raiders at Caledonia Park.
The Rams, who were last year’s Cullen Cup winners, look to get back in the Canadian Bowl again this year after losing 39-14 to the Saskatoon Hilltops in last year’s Canadian Bowl and won’t go down without a fight this season. Although the Rams lost leading scorer Daniel English in the offseason to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a key player for the team will be Nathan Lund, who scored seven touchdowns in the 2014 regular season and rushed 51 times for for 411 yards. Lund has also been taking reps at the BC Lions training facility with fellow Rams players Anthony Daley and John Beckerleg as they prepare themselves for their first game of the season.
The Raiders, who lost 2014 Wally Buono award winner Dylan Chapdelaine and 2014 CJFL leading receiver Marshall Cook, will need to depend on a new crop of up-and-comers against a Rams team looking to start the season off with a bang. With the addition of new head coach Jerome Erdman, who has been a big part of the Team BC program, fans can expect positive changes this season with the Raiders. Several players to look out for include linebacker Dexter Shea, who the Raiders will look to fill Chapdelaine’s starting spot, and Alex Kutra, who was second to Cook in receiving last season, scoring eight touchdowns on 25 touches for 563 yards in his 2014 campaign.
Last season, the Rams and the Raiders met three times, with the home team taking the win each time. Will the Raiders be able to seal the win against the defending Cullen Cup champions on home turf? Tune in and find out!
